The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Wilmer Eye Institute seeks an experienced Physician Assistant to perform ophthalmological consultations (outpatient and occasional emergency department), perform pre-operative evaluations for patients scheduled for surgery and see patients in an independent clinic setting for routine and medical ophthalmological care and minor procedures.


The successful applicant will be involved in a busy a medical practice and is expected to contribute to the educational and academic mission. This position includes status as an assistant faculty member of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and as a full-time active staff of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Direct supervision will be provided by an appropriate licensed physician. Expectations of the applicant include graduation from an accredited collegiate program with BS or BA degree, certification by NCCPA or similar national certifying body, completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program, and current certification as a Physician Assistant by the State of Maryland. At last one year of related clinical experience is required, (preferably in ophthalmology).


Requirements
Responsible for performing patient care ophthalmology consultations at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Wilmer Eye Institute and in the Johns Hopkins Hospital emergency department. Performs pre-operative evaluations for patients scheduling surgery at Wilmer Eye Institute surgical enterprises. Sees ophthalmology patients for routine, medical and minor procedures in an independent clinic in the Wilmer Eye Institute General Eye Service Division. Educates patients and families in matters pertaining to health maintenance, disease prevention and appropriate measures in acute and chronic conditions. Direct supervision from appropriate licensed physician as designated.


Essential Job Functions:



Perform and document a comprehensive, accurate history and physical including chief compliant, presenting signs and symptoms, and past medical history and interval history using electronic medical record system. Recognize differences between normal and abnormal findings in a patient history and physical. Significant findings are validated or discussed with a physician as appropriate.

Order diagnostic tests and other services. Abnormal findings are discussed with a physician as appropriate.

Prescribe and regulate medications.

Perform injections.

Document and sign off on charts in compliance with established targets for completion.

Determine differential diagnosis.

Maintain technical proficiency with approved procedures.

Refer patient to specialist/s based on medical evaluation and findings.

Give input for design of research protocols and procedures.

Remain proficient in the utilization of commonly used clinical protocols and guidelines.

Remain abreast of new treatment modalities and technologies within the field of ophthalmology.

Participate in the interviewing process of clinical staff.

Attend staff meetings.
