Job Summary/Purpose:

The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant is under the general direction and responsibility of the supervising/collaborating physician, assumes responsibility and accountability for providing care including E&M Services, Stress Testing, Triage, H&P and discharge management for assigned patients. Collaborates with members of the health care team to establish protocols, supervise treatment plan and monitor quality of clinical practice. The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will work with physicians and team management to assist in direct patient care, case management, practice development, and implementation of policies and procedures focused on patient-centered care models.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs all evaluation procedures for patients, including history and complete physical examination, distinguishes between normal and abnormal findings, and orders diagnostic testing as appropriate. Prescribes necessary treatment and records patient data and tentative conclusions for review by physician. Performs Stress Test Supervision, phone triage, E&M Services and discharge management for cardiac inpatients and outpatients.
Assumes responsibility for management of care for assigned patient caseload, establishing protocols with supervising physician and monitoring treatment plans and clinical practice.
Monitor care delivered, clinical expert, role model and teacher/preceptor for nurses, students, interns and residents. Provides instruction, supervision and education as necessary. Maintains professionalism and clinical expertise. Attends educational conferences, maintains active membership in professional organization.
Attends appropriate meetings as required.
Potential precepting of MUSC NP or PA students during their clinical year.

Physical Requirements:

Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
