Advanced Practice Provider (APP)

Job Summary:
The position of APP is to assist physician with surgical cases, and see patients in the daily course of the practice as described below. Maximizes physician time and skills. This is a full time salaried position, not a timed 40 hours per work week. Role is performed under the direction and supervision of the Physician. The providers and staff works together as a team to provide a continuum of health care needs.

Education & Experience:
Bachelors or Masters Degree and completion of Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physicians Assistants or Kansas State Board of Healing Arts. Two years prior APP experience in a surgeon’s office preferred. Skill in assisting at surgery, taking medical history, assessing medical conditions, interpreting findings and applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of medicine to provide on-going patient care. Skill in preparing and maintaining records, writing reports, and responding to correspondence. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, employees, physicians, and the public. Strong organizational and communication skills with the flexibility to work on multiple tasks at one time. React calmly and effectively in emergency situation.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in a physician office environment and hospital/surgical suite. Requires full range of body motion including, but not limited to, bending, lifting, finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination and handling and lifting of patients (occasionally lifting patients weighing up to 300 pounds). Requires standing, walking and /or sitting for extended periods of time along with the potential for irregular hours. Requires exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids. Requires normal visual acuity and hearing. Requires working under stress in emergency situations or during irregular hours. Requires working with patients who are sick, irritable, upset or confused. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include But Not Limited To:
1. Preparation for and assist with surgical Cases.
2. Checks and reviews pre-op labs or EKG’s, etc. to be sure patient is approved for surgery as required by surgeon.
3. Performs pre-op work-ups for surgery patients with upcoming surgery.
4. Help with history and physical, documentation and positioning of patient.
5. Assist in surgery as coordinated with surgical scheduling and with MD’s.
6. Assist with wound closures, fitting of braces, post op orders, and transferring of patients to post op area.
7. On occasions, may be needed after hours or weekends in emergency situations – if needed by the physicians.
8. Make Hospital rounds as required by physicians.
9. Prepares discharge summaries and H&P’s.
10. Assists in hospital rounds on the weekends.
11. Performs a complete physical exam and records findings. Establishes a presumptive diagnosis.
12. Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures.
13. Has their own office schedule for follow-up patients, post-ops, pre-ops and ER work-in patients.
14. Handles phone calls from patients.
15. Takes phone calls from the hospital floors for orders and questions on patients.
16. Answers phone calls from outside physicians and/or ER physicians.
17. Assists with forms for patients to be completed (such as Work Comp, Disability etc.).
18. Perform timely completion of patient medical records and billing (within 2 days of the patient being seen).
19. Shares call with Providers.
20. Demonstrates a professional attitude and approach with patients while ensuring confidentiality of patient and practice information.
21. Enhances professional growth and development through in-service meetings and educational programs.
22. Attends required office meetings and participates in committees as requested.
23. Exhibits flexibility in work place and takes initiative in offering to help other departments when indicated. Participates in special programs as assigned.
24. Maintains strictest confidentiality.
25. Performs other duties as assigned.
