A. Job Summary
Under general supervision and direction of the Ophthalmologist or Optometrist, the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant performs a variety of technical procedures that will require judgment and knowledge of sophisticated equipment. Certified Ophthalmic Assistant assist in areas such as visual acuity testing. Performs more extensive ophthalmic care patient work ups including some advanced technical testing (i.e. FDT, HVF), contrast sensitivity, IOL Master, pupil check, angle checks, pachymetry. Assists the ophthalmologist in performing minor surgical procedures, greets and identifies patients, takes a preliminary history, and, as needed, performs visual fields, dilates pupils, and departmental duties to improve patient flow and department function.

1. C-I-CARE (1, 2)
a. Executes world class practices of service and patient care in support of C-I-CARE standards.
b. Uses C-I-CARE templates and the following components for all communication with patients and staff:
· CONNECT with people by calling them their proper name, or the name they prefer (Mr., Ms., Dr.)
· INTRODUCE yourself and your role
· COMMUNICATE what you are going to do, how long it will take, and how it will impact the patient
· ASK permission before entering a room, examining a patient or undertaking an activity
· RESPOND to patient's questions or requests promptly; anticipate patient needs
· EXIT courteously with an explanation of what will come next
2. Ophthalmologist/Optometrist Assistance
a. Performs specific visual testing, ie: Visual acuity, all modalities of visual field testing i.e. GVF, HVF, Tangent screen, confrontation fields. Angle check, pupil check, advance lensometry, advance tonometry, Pachymetry, color vision testing. Performs axial biometry, manual and automated Keratometry, Topography. Performs ancillary testing including Fundus photography, Slit lamp photography, and OCT. Dilation of pupils (including the administration of eye medications), contact lens trainings for insertion and removal according to policy and procedures.
b. Assists the physician with minor surgical procedures and laser procedures by selecting and preparing proper equipment and supplies as directed and according to policy and procedures.
3. Patient Communication
a. Greets and accompanies patient to exam room, obtains and documents appropriate assessment data from the patient in an accurate, timely and efficient manner.
b. Communicates with patients in person explaining the procedures that will be performed, i.e.: office surgeries, visual fields, refractions, fundus photographs and answer or defer questions to the ophthalmologist/ optometrist in a timely, accurate and efficient manner. Communicates consistently with AIDET and SBAR communication styles.
4. Clerical Duties
a. Performs clerical duties such as; referrals, calling pharmacies with prescriptions, faxing orders and reports, scheduling surgeries, supplying rooms with stock items, maintaining supplies for contact lens dept., returning patient phone calls etc. in a timely and accurate manner consistent with policy and procedures.
b. Performs duties to ensure OSHA, infection control and IMQ compliance, such as checking refrigerator temperatures, checking medication outdates, autoclave sterility checks, etc. in a timely and accurate manner consistent with policy and procedures.
5. All other duties as assigned including department-specific functions and responsibilities (1, 2):
a. Performs other duties as assigned and participates in organization projects as assigned.
b. Adheres to safety, P4P's (if applicable), HIPAA and compliance policies.

C. INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT:

Work is performed in accordance with established schedules and procedures, but employees are expected to prioritize assignments, adjust schedules or alter sequence of steps as necessary to obtain desired results.
